Spring Has Arrived – Time to Get Back on the Bike

1 September 2026

September 1 marks the first day of spring in Australia – and that means summer riding is just around the corner. For many of us, winter is the season when the bike gets pushed to the back of the shed. The early mornings are darker, the weather isn't always inviting, and somehow those months seem to disappear. But spring is here. And now is the perfect time to dust off the bike, give it a little attention and start getting those kilometres back into the legs. Before You Ride: Give Your Bike a Check If your bike has been sitting unused for a few months, don't just jump on and head out for a big ride. Give it a quick once-over first. Check your tyres. Tyres can lose pressure while a bike is sitting, and if they've been stored for a long time, check for cracks, cuts or signs of wear. Check your brakes. Make sure your brake pads have plenty of life left and that the brakes feel firm and responsive. Check your chain. A quick clean and some fresh chain lubricant can make a big difference to how your bike feels. Check your gears. Run through the gears while the bike is stationary or on a work stand. If shifting feels slow, noisy or inconsistent, it may be worth getting your bike serviced. Give it a clean. A clean bike isn't just about looking good. Removing old dirt and grime gives you a chance to spot worn or damaged components before they become a problem. If your bike has been sitting for months, a professional service is also a great way to start the new riding season with confidence. Don't Try to Make Up for Lost Kilometres One of the biggest mistakes people make when returning to cycling is trying to pick up exactly where they left off. If you were comfortably riding 60 or 80 kilometres every weekend last summer, don't assume you can jump straight back into it after several months away. Start smaller. A relaxed 20–30 km ride is a great way to get moving again. Give your body a chance to remember what cycling feels like, then gradually increase your distance and intensity over the following weeks. The goal isn't to smash your first ride. The goal is to enjoy getting back on the bike. Spring Is the Perfect Time to Check Your Cycling Gear Getting the bike ready is only part of the equation. Spring is also a good opportunity to look at your cycling clothing and accessories. Is your old jersey still comfortable? Are your cycling shorts starting to show their age? Do you have decent gloves, sunglasses and a helmet? Is your bike computer charged and ready to go? The warmer months are when you'll hopefully be spending more time riding, so having comfortable, reliable cycling equipment can make every ride more enjoyable. At BeeVelo, we're passionate about making quality cycling equipment accessible to Australian riders – whether you're getting back into cycling, training for your next event or simply looking for a better weekend ride. Make This Summer Your Best Riding Season Yet You don't need to set a huge goal. Maybe it's riding your first 50 km. Maybe it's joining a local cycling group. Maybe it's commuting to work once or twice a week. Maybe it's finally getting that bike out of the shed that's been sitting there for the last two years! Whatever your goal, spring is the perfect time to start. The weather is improving, the days are getting longer and summer is on its way. So dust off the bike, check the tyres, charge the bike computer, pull on your favourite kit and get riding. We'll see you out there. Ride More. Ride Better. Ride BeeVelo.
